Sleeve, coated or overmolded: how silicone gets on a glass baby bottle

Overview

A glass bottle with silicone on the outside can be made three ways. The silicone can be a sleeve you pull off, a layer that's bonded or coated onto the glass, or a wrap molded around the glass in a mold. They look alike on a shelf. They don't wash, wear or handle a drop the same way.

Sleeve A separate silicone piece slipped over the glass. You take it off to wash, and it can be lost or swapped.

Bonded or coated Silicone fixed to the glass for good. Brands describe it as "bonded", "fused" or "coated", and rarely say more about how it's done.

Overmolded The glass goes into a mold and liquid silicone is injected around it. The wrap can be thicker where it's needed, like the base, and it doesn't come off.

We've grouped brands by the words on their own product pages. None of them publish how the silicone is applied in detail, so treat the middle column as a description, not a teardown.

Why the method matters

You'll notice it at the sink first.

  • Cleaning: a sleeve is one more piece to wash and dry, and it has to come off to get at the glass underneath. A fixed wrap goes in the dishwasher as one bottle.
  • Where the protection sits: a molded wrap can put more silicone where it's wanted, like the base, rather than the same layer all over.
  • Warming: any silicone layer slows heat getting through. If you warm milk often, plain glass warms faster.

None of the three stops glass from breaking. Silicone softens a knock and can hold broken glass together. It doesn't change what glass is.

How we make ours

The Wrapped Glass Bottle starts as a borosilicate glass bottle. It goes into a mold, and liquid food-grade silicone is injected around it. The silicone is thickest at the base.

It doesn't come off, and there's no sleeve to lose. The milk only touches glass and the silicone nipple. The plastic cap and collar sit outside the milk path.

It absorbs most drops and contains the glass if it does break. Inspect it after any drop, and stop using it if the glass is cracked, even if the wrap still holds it together.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between silicone-coated and silicone-sleeve glass bottles?

A sleeve is a separate piece you pull off to wash. A coated or bonded bottle has the silicone fixed to the glass for good, so it's one piece.

What does overmolded mean on a baby bottle?

The glass is placed in a mold and liquid silicone is injected around it. The silicone can be shaped and made thicker in places, like the base, and it stays on.

Can you take the silicone off a Ronini bottle?

No. The wrap is molded on, so the bottle washes as one piece and there's nothing to come loose.

Do silicone-covered glass bottles still break?

Yes, they can. The silicone softens most knocks and helps hold broken glass together, but glass is still glass. Check the bottle after every drop.

Can I warm milk in a silicone-wrapped glass bottle?

You can, but the silicone slows the warming down. If you warm milk often, plain glass, like our Glass Bottle, is quicker.
